Description

The chair knot is a complex knot that forms a secure seat with a loop for sitting and a loop for back support. The structure consists of multiple interlocking loops that distribute the person's weight evenly. It is tied using a single rope without any hardware.

Common Uses

Used historically in maritime and industrial settings for hoisting a person for maintenance work, and in rescue operations where a harness is unavailable.

How to Tie

  1. 1Form a large bight and tie an overhand knot to create a sitting loop.
  2. 2Create a second loop above the first for back support by manipulating the rope through the knot body.
  3. 3Adjust both loops to fit the user's body.
  4. 4Pass the standing ends through the back loop to form a bridle.
  5. 5Tighten all components evenly.
  6. 6Test the seat before loading with full weight.
