Sheepshank
Also known as:Shortening Knot

Description
The sheepshank is a method of shortening a rope without cutting it, by folding the rope into a Z-shape and securing each bend with a half hitch. The knot holds only under tension and will fall apart when slack. It is a classic knot with a distinctive three-strand appearance.
Common Uses
Used for temporarily shortening a rope, bypassing a worn or damaged section, or adjusting the length of a line in non-critical applications.
How to Tie
- 1Fold the rope into a Z-shape with two parallel sections.
- 2Tie a half hitch around one of the standing parts at the first bend.
- 3Tie a half hitch around the other standing part at the second bend.
- 4Pull the standing ends to tension the knot.
- 5Check that both hitches are secure against the bends.
