Prusik Knot
Also known as:Grab Knot

Description
The Prusik knot is a friction hitch that grips the main rope when loaded but slides easily when unloaded. It is tied by wrapping a smaller-diameter cord around a larger main rope multiple times. The number of wraps determines the gripping strength.
Common Uses
Essential in climbing and mountaineering for ascending ropes, creating self-belay systems, and setting up rope ascending or traversing systems.
How to Tie
- 1Form a loop with a cord (a prusik loop) and place it behind the main rope.
- 2Pass the loop through itself twice or three times.
- 3Dress the wraps so they lie flat and parallel against the main rope.
- 4Pull the loop to seat the wraps snugly.
- 5Test that the knot grips when loaded and slides when relaxed.
