Prusik Knot

Description

The Prusik knot is a friction hitch that grips the main rope when loaded but slides easily when unloaded. It is tied by wrapping a smaller-diameter cord around a larger main rope multiple times. The number of wraps determines the gripping strength.

Common Uses

Essential in climbing and mountaineering for ascending ropes, creating self-belay systems, and setting up rope ascending or traversing systems.

How to Tie

  1. 1Form a loop with a cord (a prusik loop) and place it behind the main rope.
  2. 2Pass the loop through itself twice or three times.
  3. 3Dress the wraps so they lie flat and parallel against the main rope.
  4. 4Pull the loop to seat the wraps snugly.
  5. 5Test that the knot grips when loaded and slides when relaxed.
