Description

The marlinspike hitch creates a temporary but secure attachment point that can be used as a lever or handle on a rope. It is tied by wrapping the rope around an object such as a metal spike or bar and then tucking the spike through a loop.

Common Uses

Used in sailing and rigging to create a temporary handle for hauling, tensioning, or as a lever for tightening rope and wire.

How to Tie

  1. 1Form a bight in the rope.
  2. 2Pass the bight behind the standing part.
  3. 3Insert the spike or lever through the bight from the front.
  4. 4Pull the spike to lever and tension the rope.
  5. 5Remove the spike to release the hitch.
