Slippery Sheet Bend

Description

The slippery sheet bend is a variation of the standard sheet bend where the thinner rope is passed back through the knot in a way that creates a quick-release function. It retains the joining capability of the sheet bend but can be undone with a single pull of the free end.

Common Uses

Used when a temporary connection between two ropes is needed that must be quickly released, such as in towing or temporary rigging.

How to Tie

  1. 1Form a bight in the thicker rope.
  2. 2Pass the working end of the second rope up through the bight.
  3. 3Wrap around the standing part of the first rope.
  4. 4Instead of tucking under its own part, form a bight of the second rope and tuck that through.
  5. 5Pull the standing ends to tighten, leaving the bight exposed for release.
  6. 6Pull the free end to instantly release the knot.
